How do I get a tax file number?

When you get your first job, or when you study a course at a university or registered training organisation where you get VET FEE Help, you will need to get a tax file number (TFN).

If you get a part-time or casual job while you are at school, you will need to get a TFN. There are two ways to get a TFN:

Complete a Web Form and go to a participating Post Office

If you are able to attend an interview at a participating Australia Post retail outlet, you can apply for a TFN on the web. When you have submitted your application on the web and printed out the summary, you need to arrange an interview at a participating Australia Post Shop. The participating Australia post shops can found using the Australia Post Locator . Not all Australia Post outlets process TFN applications. To find out which postal outlets process TFN applications in the location you have selected, select Identity and document services and then ATO Individual TFN services.

Proof of Identify documents to take to your interview

You need to take proof of identity documents with you to your interview. These must be originals, not photocopies.

Students 16 years of age and older must provide three proof of identity documents, one of which must be a primary document.

Students under 16 years must provide two proof of identity documents, one of which must be a primary document.

A list of what counts as a primary document or a secondary document is avaialble on the ATO website .

Linking documents must be provided for students who have changed their name, or where a parent/guardian or legally appointed custodian is signing on behalf of the applicant. There is a list of linking documents on the bottom of the proof of identity page on the ATO website .

Contact the ATO and get a TFN Application Form sent to you

If you can't get to a participating Australia Post retail outlet, you will need to place an online order or telephone order (ph: 1300 720 092) for a Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals (NAT 1432) form. This form will be posted to you. You can get assistance to complete the paper application on the ATO website .

You will need to post it to the ATO together with copies of your Proof of Identity documents certified by an approved ATO certifier.

You will receive your TFN up to 28 days after your application has been received by the ATO. Your TFN will be posted to your home address.
