Vocational Education and Training (VET), TAFE & RTOs

Vocational Education and Training (VET) develops skills:

  • For jobs
  • To enter the workforce for the first time
  • For a trade. Examples include Automotive Technician, Butcher, Carpenter, Cook, Electrician, Florist, Hairdresser, Fitter-Machinist, etc.
  • For skilled occupations and paraprofessional occupations. Examples include Accounts Clerk, Conference Organiser, Dental Assistant, Enrolled Nurse, Laboratory Technician, Waiter
  • To get new skills required for jobs
  • To retrain for a different job

Registered Training Organisations deliver VET qualifications. RTOs include:

  • TAFEs
  • Private training organisations, called RTOs
  • Schools that offer VET programs
  • Other organisations registered to deliver VET qualifications

VET qualifications include:

  • Certificate I
  • Certificate II
  • Certificate III
  • Certificate IV
  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma

Sometimes you don't need to complete a whole VET qualification. If appropriate you can complete one or more units of competency. For example:

  1. If you want to do work experience in the Construction industry you will need to complete CPCCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry.
  2. If you want to get a part-time job serving alcoholic drinks in restaurant you will need to complete: SITHFAB002 - Provide responsible service of alcohol.

You can do Skill Sets with TAFE or an RTO. Skill Sets are a bundle of units of competency related to a particular industry. For example:

  1. If you got a part-time job in a Pharmacy, you could complete the skillset, IRSS00030 - Introduction to Community Pharmacy.
  2. If you were going to start your own small business, you could complete BSBSS00102 - Micro Business Skill Set

Some TAFEs may offer higher education qualifications such bachelor degrees. Some TAFE courses provide a pathway to university courses.
