Vocational Education and Training (VET), TAFE & RTOs

Vocational Education and Training (VET) develops skills for jobs, including skills to enter the workforce for the first time, skills for a trade such as electrician or florist, skills for a paraprofessional occupation such as enrolled nurse, skills for upgrading an existing job, or skills needed to retrain for a different job.

VET qualifications are delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), including Technical and Further Education (TAFE), private training organisations, some schools and non-government organisations registered to deliver VET qualifications.

VET qualifications include:

Advanced Diploma
Certificate I
Certificate II
Certificate III
Certificate IV
Advanced Diploma

Rather than completing a whole qualification, some people may complete one or more units of a qualification or a bundle of units in the form of a Skill Set related to a specific industry. For example, some people complete may complete the unit, SITHFAB009A Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol to enable them to work in an business were they may be serving alcohol, or CPCCCOHS1001A Work safely in the Construction Industry (White Card) to get work experience while at school or a job in the Construction Industry. Similarly, a TAFE or RTO may offer a group of units as a skill set related to specific industry, such as a Shipboard Safety Skill Set as a minimum requirement for woking on a commercial vessel, although not a complete qualification.

Some TAFEs or RTOs may offer higher education qualifications such as associate degree, bachelor degrees, pathway to university courses and some may offer courses that enable you to complete your senior secondary education certificate.
