Career development occurs across the lifespan. In the contemporary world of work in Australia, there is a decreasing trend towards 'a job for life' in a single organisation where employees can pursue career progression or career diversity opportunities. Instead, there is an increasing trend towards short-term contract work, project work and outsourcing. In addition many workers who are approaching traditional retirement age may not be ready, or financially able to relinquish the worker role.
